Is a digital marketing class beneficial for you? A review of #ADM4326.

For marketing students, it’s a no-brainer to take a digital marketing course as one of your electives. However, for those in other specializations of business or even across faculties, you may be asking yourself, would a digital marketing class be beneficial for you? The short answer to this question is yes - it is beneficial!

Why should you take this course?

The world has shifted, and a majority of marketing efforts are now executed digitally. Marketers are steering away from printing thousands of posters and putting them up all over the city. Not only that, but in our society today, marketing isn’t only done by those in the industry; each person who is on a social media platform seems to own a business, write a blog, or engage in some form of marketing. ADM 4326 not only allows you to learn about digital marketing and see what direction the industry is going, but also provides you with tools to create a digital platform (your own website!). Plus, you get to meet and interact with real professionals from the industry. Moreover, you learn from Professor Jonathan Simon, who is well-known in the industry and is an inspiring, dedicated professor. His passion for the field is illustrated through his engaged teaching and commitment to his students and the course.

Creating your Platform

The structure of most university courses is attending the lecture, absorbing the content, completing assignments, and pumping out exams to show that you understand the information and can store it until it becomes useful for you down the road in your career. However, ADM 4326 is different. This is a hands-on class where you can immediately put into practice everything you have learned. So yes, you sit in the lectures and learn the content, but you also apply the information you learned to your website to build a brand for yourself.

At the beginning of the course, you are given a Page Cloud account that you have access to for life. Throughout each lecture of the course, you are taught things that are intended to help you build your website and understand the digital marketing space. Some of the things you are taught are tips to increase your following, how to write successful blogs and content to reach a target audience, various digital marketing tools, and so many other useful tips and tricks.

 Networking with Professionals

One of the things that makes this course stand out from others is the weekly guest speakers. Each week Professor Simon brings in one of his connections to speak with the class and share their story. The guest speakers range from past students of Professor Simon to people who he has worked with in the past and those he has met along his journey thus far. The presentations are extremely inspiring; you not only learn about something new, but you can get tips from professionals who were in your exact position not too long ago. After each presentation, you can network and ask questions to the speaker and connect with them on social media. Many of the guest speakers are more than happy to meet with you outside of their presentation and discuss your career path. Some are even looking to hire students! Examples of guest speakers I had the pleasure of networking with were Amelia from Shopify, JB from Home Depot, Alexa from Seoplus+, Colin from Arlene and Hayden from Cashion Marketing to name a few.
